Why Should Muslims Defend Slavery and Minor Marriage? By: Daniel Haqiqatjou
The central tenets of Islam are basic beliefs (e.g., Allah, Angels, His Books, His Prophets, the Last Day, Divine Decree) and basic religious duties (e.g., shahada, prayer, fasting, zakat, hajj).
These central tenets are encapsulated in the 6 pillars of Iman and the 5 pillars of Islam.
Slavery and minor marriage are not central tenets of Islam, nor have Muslims ever understood them as such. Nevertheless, some contemporary Muslims, including myself, spend an enormous amount of time debating and defending slavery and minor marriage.
Why?
Debates over slavery and minor marriage are… never really about slavery or minor marriage.
They are about upholding the teachings of Islam in a principled fashion.
To understand this we have to understand the tactics of liberal secularists in these debates.
Liberal secularists use a particular method for destroying religions. This method can be explained as follows.
First, liberals select out those religious teachings that are most offensive to contemporary liberal sensibilities. Liberals then continuously publicize and attack these teachings until members of the religion renounce them.
Then, once this is done, liberals move onto the next most “offensive” teachings found in the religion. Liberals publicize and attack them until they are also renounced. Liberals continue on with this tactic until the entire religion has been renounced and nothing remains of the original traditional tenets of that religion.
This is exactly what liberalism did to Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism over the past 200 years. This is why the majority of the adherents of these religions have renounced most of the teachings found in their scriptures.
Now liberals have been trying the same tactics on Islam.
If Muslims conceded on slavery and minor marriage, liberals would move onto attacking polygyny and hijab. If Muslims concede on those, liberals would move onto attacking imams only being men. If Muslims concede on that, liberals would move onto the concept of Hell and the “offensive” idea that one must obey Allah or face eternal punishment. If Muslims concede on that, liberals would move onto Allah being referred to as “He” and not “She” or “Xe” (or some other queer pronoun). And so on.
The only way to block this liberal tactic — and to ensure that one’s religion is not destroyed — is to take a principled stance from the start.
This means not making any concessions. When Muslims defend slavery and minor marriage, in accordance with the Quran, Sunnah, and 1400 years of scholarly consensus, they are saying:
We will not let liberals destroy our religion in the same way that liberals have destroyed every other religion. We will not permit you to eradicate all religion from the face of this earth.
This is why this is so important.
This is also why Muslims should denounce or, in some circumstances, even excommunicate liberal “Muslims” and reformists who are happy to concede to all the liberal pressures. These sell outs, if left unchecked, threaten the future of Islam and, indeed, the future of religion on the face of the earth.
